Winter Is Over: Pet Care Tips To Get Your Dog Ready For Spring

Winter is finally over. Now that the weather is warming up, it's time to get your dog ready for spring. If your dog's been cooped up in the house all winter long, a trip to the vet will get them ready for the weather change. Here are four pet care tips to get your dog ready for spring.

Start a Flea and Tick Program

With the weather warming up, you'll need to worry about fleas and ticks. That's especially true if your dog likes to spend a lot of time outside during the spring and summer. Fleas and ticks can pose a serious problem for your dog. But, they can also pose a risk for you and your family. Before you start your outdoor activities this spring, talk to your vet about starting a flea and tick control program. There are treatment options available to keep fleas and ticks away from your dog and out of your house.

Get Heartworm Treatment

If you have a dog, spring is the perfect time for heartworm treatment. Heartworms are small parasitic worms that get inside your dog through mosquito bites. Once inside, heartworms can cause heart and lung disease. They can also cause damage to other organs inside your dog. If left untreated, heartworm disease can also lead to death. That's why treatment is so important. Before your dog starts visiting doggy parks this spring, take them to the vet for heartworm treatment.

Control the Shedding

Now that spring is here, your dog will start losing its winter coat. Shedding can be a real problem for your dog, especially if it has a thick coat. One way to control the shedding is to brush your dog's fur several times a day. Brushing your dog can help control the shedding. It can also help stop matting. While you're brushing your dog's fur, be sure to check the skin for rashes. Dry skin can lead to infections once the weather warms up.

Schedule Grooming

If you haven't scheduled an appointment at the groomer yet, now's the time to do that. Grooming is a great way to get your dog ready for spring and summer. Grooming should be on the list for spring and summer pet care essentials. In addition to bathing your dog, the groomers will also trim your dog's nails, and clean its ears. It's a good idea to take your dog to the groomer at least once a month during the spring and summer.
